The Great Southern Wine Voyage
Measuring 150km from N to S and 100km from E to W, the Great Southern wine region is in fact the largest in Australia by land mass. It boasts an amazing, diverse topography, featuring lush forest reserves, idyllic pastures, picturesque agriculture lands, pristine beaches and majestic cliffs standing tall against the fearsome Southern Ocean.
The region’s potential was identified in 1955, a full decade before Margaret River. Now, more than 60 years on and 40 years since its first commercial bottling, Great Southern is finally stepping into global limelight.

One of the earliest pioneers in the Mount Barker sub-region, Galafrey is the quintessential Great Southern family-owned estate. Galafrey’s trials and tribulations, and journey onto the international stage, is almost synonymous with the Great Southern’s. By the mid 1980s, Galafrey began achieving domestic and international trophies and has never looked back. Today, Galafrey is a preeminent estate in the Great Southern wine region. The estate is renowned for its dry grown vineyard (i.e. natural irrigation), sacrificing volume for grapes of phenomenal quality.

Rockcliffe is named after the 100m high granite rock cliffs that dominate the eastern end of Denmark’s main bay (referring to the town Denmark in Western Australia, not the European country). This same granite lies beneath the vineyard and gives distinctive characteristics to their wines. The gum and eucalyptus trees surrounding the estate, combined with the cool ocean breezes, create a serene terroir where cool climate wines of distinction are produced.

Located west of the old town of Narrikup and in the heart of Great Southern, Poacher’s Ridge was founded in 1999 by loving couple Alex and Janet Taylor as an estate that stays true to the history of its land and produces wines that best reflects its terroir. The stunning family-owned small batch producer holds immense pride and passion in its 20 acres of vines and phenomenal terroir-driven wines. A 5 red star estate, the wines here are produced by James Halliday Winemaker of the Year 2015, Robert Diletti.

The name ‘La Violetta’ derives from an old Piedmontese song celebrating intoxication. Winemaker Andrew Hoadley began producing small quantities of wine at Denmark, on Western Australia’s south coast, in 2008. Grapes are sourced from a handful of trusted growers with exceptional vineyards, some amongst the oldest in the state. The idea is to keep production at a small scale so that each wine is personally hand-crafted.

What To Expect
Receive a Wine Passport upon boarding, and navigate your way through the tasting stations around the al-fresco Bridge Deck. Collect chops along the way for with every wine you taste, and be sure to fill up the entire passport to get a full experience of the Great Southern! There will also be a selection of Chips, Breads and Canapes by the Riverboat’s culinary team to accompany the wines.
Keen to learn more about this exceptional yet lesser-known wine region? Listen to some short Presentations by the four visiting winery representatives as they share with you about the Great Southern and their own wineries, happening between 5-6.30pm.
